Higgs Boson..Do you know about this God Particle..???

Higgs Boson is a super stuff that has kept media outlets buzzing. On July 4-2012, great Eureka moment was experienced by the scientists at CERN. It was after a half century that scientists have discovered Higgs Boson which is sometimes referred to as the God’s particle.

That’s all well and good, but what does it all mean? Let’s break it down…

The Standard Model:

The standard model is one of the most prominent theories which describe the fundamental particles and forces that control our Universe. Higgs Boson is a type of particle which is a part of what’s called the standard model of particle physics. In order to get a clear view of what is Higgs boson we will have a gist at this standard model.

It is the 12 different matter particles and four forces that make up our entire universe. Among those 12 particles, you will encounter six quarks and six leptons. The members of the quarks family include protons and neutrons, while members of the lepton family include the electron and the electron neutrino. And the four forces in the standard model is the gravity, electromagnetic, strong and weak force.

The missing puzzle in standard model:

Years before physicists have found out the 11 other particles predicted by the standard model. Unfortunately, the final piece of the model is still missing. Higgs Boson takes that final place. In the Standard Model, the Higgs particle is a boson with no spin, electric charge, or color charge.

Discovery:

This folksy name bearing particle “Higgs boson” was initially theorized in 1964.It is Peter Higgs, an Edinburgh University professor who discussed the particle that bears his name. On July 4, 2012, scientists working with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) announced their discovery of a particle which has a combined mass of 126 protons ,i.e. it’s mass is estimated to be 126 GeV( Giga electron volts) and they suspect it to be the Higgs boson. Some researchers called the particle “Higgs like” until the findings and the data stood up to more scrutiny.

Finally on 14 March 2013 the particle tentatively confirmed to exist. This particle had been proven to behave, interact and decay in most of the expected ways which was predicted by the great Standard Model, and was also confirmed to have positive parity and zero spin, since those two being the fundamental criteria of a Higgs boson. Yet numbers of other properties weren’t fully proven and some partial results do not still exactly match those expected ones. However the results as of March 2013 is still uncertain and some data’s are still awaited and being analyzed.

What this little particle has got to do with the universe?

The role of Higgs Boson is to give the particles that make up atoms their mass. It is this particle that decides the size and shape of all matter.

We all know that our universe began with a big bang called, well, the Big Bang. Scientists believe few seconds after the Big Bang, an invisible energy field called the Higgs field was formed. As particles passed through this field, they picked up mass, giving them size and shape and allowing them to form the atoms that make up us, everything around us and everything in the universe. So without the Higgs field, particles would simply whizz around space in the same way as light does, unable to bind together to form the atoms that make stars and planets and people.

If this “God Particle” particle was shown not to exist, then it would have meant tearing up the Standard Model.

What yesterday’s news means for the man in the street is unclear but I hope it could lead to new discoveries in fields such as medicine, computing and electronics .I even hope that this particle would help the physicist by shedding light on other unsolved mysterious in the world.

So let’s take a moment to thank this little particle for all the work it does, because without it, we would have been just inchoate energy without any mass.
